The BIM Paradigm Shift: Technology Products and Processes for the future of Construction
Have you ever wondered what the future of Architecture is. How will we be producing buildings in 10 or 20 years? At my first Architectural job, we were using hand drafting on vellum paper. When the company went to drafting on Mylar with a pin-bar system for the Floor Plans, I thought that was the greatest. I always seem to be impressed with the innovations that are occurring with the Architectural industry.
For several years now the Architectural and Engineering industries have been working towards a new goal of Building Information Modeling (BIM). BIM is revolutionizing architecture, engineering, construction, and facility management. This future is each discipline working together based on an integrated and living database and virtual model of your building. Optimizing this technology for your firm and your projects is much more than just learning the software – it is understanding how we can best leverage BIM's capabilities, work together, and build exceptional projects. This means new ways of doing business, new models of managing your internal and external teams, and new formats for project data, documentation, and evolution. As Architects we need to get on board with BIM. Many of the manufacturers are already providing smart objects on their websites that we can just drop into our drawings. Now the question may not just be “How to implement BIM” but “When” and “What Resources are available to us also.”
We have a great speaker lined up in Chris Hubbard, AIA. He is the BIM Technology and Practice Lead at Quarry Group Inc. He has a wealth of knowledge and is glad to share that knowledge with all of us. Some of the topics that he will cover are:
- What is BIM and how does a firm adopt BIM
- How designers are using BIM
- How builders are using BIM
- What are the advantages to using BIM
- Future industry trends with BIM
This is the last seminar of the 2008/2009 season for us, and the Education Committee is going to start right in to try to figure out the best Seminars for the coming 2009/2010 season. Not sure if we are going to change the format any, but we have been trying to figure out if there are any better times or ways to present the topics. At the moment we have not found a perfect time for everyone. Some people want to start the seminars later, others say that the mingle time afterward is more important. We have looked at doing 2 separate 1-hour seminars, instead of a single 2 hour seminar. Each idea has its pluses and minuses. Unless we come up with something that is clearly better though we will leave the format as it is. Let us know if you have a topic that you would like to see, or if there is a good seminar that you could present. We especially want to hear from our members. These are your seminars.
Group Membership Rate: Register first member at $25 and pay only $10 for each additional member. Individual Registration: $25 per seminar. Student Registration: $10 per seminar. The Swedish Cultural Center is located at 1920 Dexter Avenue N, Seattle - about 1/4 mile south of the Aurora Bridge – on the West side of Lake Union.
